All the 16 gates of the Kaptai dam have been opened as the water level in the Kaptai lake in Rangamati has risen.

Locals said that these gates were opened around 8:30 am on Sunday.

As a result, even if the water in the Karnaphuli river rises, there is no danger of flooding in any area, the project officials told the media.

They said that Baghaichhari Upazila and its surrounding area would have been submerged if the water had not been released.

Currently, 16 gates have been opened and water has been released. It is expected to release 9000 cusecs of water per second in the Karnaphuli river.

However, if the rainfall, lake water flow and water level increase, the amount of water released through the gate may be gradually increased.

Earlier, the gate of Kaptai hydroelectric plant was supposed to be opened at 10 pm on Saturday, but it was not opened as the water had not touched the danger level yet.

The gates were opened as the Karnaphuli water reached near the limit at the power plant due to continuous rains and the uphill slopes of the Kaptai lake.
