The flood situation in Sunamganj remains unchanged due to continuous heavy rains and landslides from the Indian border.
At 9 am on Thursday, the river was flowing 32 cm above the boundary line at Dirai Point. Besides, water is flowing 26 cm above the flood limit at Sholghar point of the municipal city.
According to the Water Development Board, the water of Surma river has increased again at Dirai point.
However, due to less rainfall in Cherrapunji, India on Wednesday night, the water level of the Surma river in Sunamganj has decreased slightly upstream; But the water of the downstream rivers has increased. Vast areas are inundated by overflowing water. Local residents are in trouble. At present, 88 unions in 11 upazilas are spending their days under water-logged conditions. Among them, 19,000 people went to shelters.
Meanwhile, traffic is stopped on Chatak Gobindganj road, Doarabazar Chatak road, Jamalganj Sunamganj road. The direct road connection of Tahirpur upazila with the district town has been cut off due to the sinking of Sakthiarkhala road of Bishwambharpur upazila of the district.
According to district administration sources, 6 lakh 60 thousand 347 people in 1018 villages of 78 unions including four municipal areas of the district are suffering from floods. 18 thousand 429 flood affected people went to 531 shelters. Bishvambharpur Upazila Parishad, various educational institutions including land office, bazaar, rural roads, etc. have seen flood water in various places. Most of the areas of Shantiganj Upazila have been flooded. 10-15 villages were inundated in Tahirpur.
Sunamganj Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Howladar said that at 9 am on Thursday (June 20), the river water is flowing 32 cm above the water line at Dirai Point. Besides, the flow is 129 cm above the boundary line at Chatak Point. However, the water has decreased at Sholghar point of the municipal town of Sunamganj. At this point in the Surma river, the water is flowing 26 cm above the boundary line.
He also said that the flood situation remains unchanged. In the last 24 hours, Sunamganj recorded 55 mm of rain, Laure averaged 62 mm, Chatke 65 mm and Dirai 55 mm. However, the flood situation is somewhat stable in Sunamganj and Cherrapunji due to less rainfall in the last 24 hours.
District Commissioner Mohammad Rashed Iqbal Chowdhury said that a total of 531 shelters have been opened in the district for flood victims. Control rooms have been set up in the office of the District Commissioner and the offices of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer to monitor the overall flood situation. So far, 10 metric tons of rice and 2 lakh 50 thousand taka and dry food have been distributed to those who have taken shelter in shelters. Sufficient amount of relief material is also stocked.
