After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in the student uprising, now the deposed ministers, members of parliament and other leaders and activists of Awami League are going to face trial. 741 cases have been registered across the country on various specific charges. The accused in these cases include Awami League president and ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, party general secretary Obaidul Quader and almost all members of the outgoing cabinet. Former Members of Parliament (MPs) of the 14-party coalition including the Awami League have been accused in various cases outside Dhaka and Dhaka. However, apart from Chairman GM Quader and Masud Uddin Chowdhury, other Jatiya Party MPs are still out of the accused list. Apart from mentioning the names of former ministers-MPs, important leaders of Awami League and its organizations and top professionals, a large number of leaders and activists have been made ‘unknown’ accused in various cases. In addition to the charges of killing or genocide, many have been charged with attempted murder, money laundering, acquisition of illegal assets and explosives laws in the student movement.
It has been found that at least 741 cases have been filed against ministers and Awami League party MPs in the past three governments. Among them, more than 227 cases have been registered in the capital. The remaining 514 cases were reported in other districts. Among these cases, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been accused in almost two hundred cases.
The review showed that despite the tide of cases across the country, some districts are still out. No cases were reported in Gaibandha, Bagerhat, Rangamati, Bandarban, Chuadanga and Kurigram. Some senior ministers-MPs have not been prosecuted in their own areas, but they have been accused in the capital. Although hundreds of cases have been filed in different parts of the country including the capital, no case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader in their own areas.
A review of the preliminary facts of the case shows that the list of accused in each case is almost the same. In the beginning, the cases were filed against several thousand anonymous accused after mentioning a few names. These cases have been done with some changes depending on the area. In many cases, it has been alleged that personal anger of the plaintiffs or counsels of the case has been expressed behind the prosecution. Again in many cases the plaintiff himself does not know but the case has been registered in the police station. Again, persons who are not known to the plaintiff or he does not know, have also been accused. There have even been allegations of harassment by threatening the plaintiff or entering the name in the case through financial transactions.
According to the information received, at least 50 cases have been registered in Chittagong district so far. Cases have been filed against the former MPs except Khadijatul Anwar Soni, Mahfuzur Rahman Mita, SM Al Mamun Sarkar. At least 10 against ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud, Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel, former Lands Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed and Finance State Minister Wasika Ayesha Khan have multiple cases in Dhaka and Chittagong.
No case was filed against Anwar Hussain Khan and Abdulya Al Mamun in Lakshmipur. In Comilla, there was no case against Abdul Majeed, Jahangir Alam and Abu Zafar Mohammad Shafi Uddin. Several cases have been filed against former LGRD Minister Tajul Islam, former Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal and former Railway Minister Mujibul Haque in their respective areas including Dhaka.
In Cox’s Bazar, a case has been filed against three former MPs including former MP Abdur Rahman Badi, but there is no case against Zafar Alam.
Although there is no case against the general secretary of Awami League in Noakhali, cases have been filed against other MPs.
There are two cases against former law minister Anisul Haque in Brahmanbaria. He is now in jail in several cases. However, there are three cases against Public Works Minister RM Ubaidul Muktadir Chowdhury and former Liberation War Affairs Minister AB Tajul Islam is in jail. However, there is no case against Faizur Rahman Badal.
The highest number of eight cases have been filed against Nizam Uddin Hazari in Feni. Apart from this, one murder case has been filed against Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim and three against Masud Uddin Chowdhury.
There are three cases against Awami League joint general secretary and former education minister Dipu Moni in Chandpur but no case against Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Shafiqur Rahman and Rafiqul Islam Biruttam.
It is known that 15 cases have been registered in Barisal division. Among these, a case has also been filed against Shahjahan Omar, the controversial member of parliament of Jhalkathi-1 constituency, who joined Awami League before the 12th National Parliament election and was elected under the boat symbol. Amir Hossain Amu, coordinator and spokesperson of 14 parties of Jhalkathi-2 constituency, is in this list. Although there is no case in the area, in a case in Dhaka, the MP of Patuakhali-2 Constituency former Chief Whip AS Feroze is in jail. A case has been filed against Patuakhali-4 Constituency Member of Parliament and former Minister of State for Relief Mohibbur Rahman Mohib on charges of demand for subscription. A case of beating against Pankaj Debnath of Barisal-4, State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Farooq Shamim, Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Sh.M. Rezaul Karim, Nurnabi Chowdhury Shaon of Bhola-3 has not been registered in the area but a murder case has been registered in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur Police Station. However, Sultana Nadira Jolly of Barguna-2 Constituency, Abul Hasanat Abdullah of Barisal-1, Mohiuddin Maharaj of Pirojpur-2 Constituency, Shamim Shahnewaz of Pirojpur-3 Constituency, Bhola-1 Constituency MP Awami League Advisory Council Member and Former Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Bhola-4 There is no case against Abdullah Al Islam Jacob.
On the other hand, 56 cases have been registered in Sylhet division. Former Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen is accused in at least 7 cases including murder, sabotage. There are at least 20 cases of murder and sabotage against Sylhet district Awami League president and former MP Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury. A case has been filed against former expatriate welfare minister Imran Ahmad and former education minister Nurul Islam Nahid, former environment minister Shahab Uddin, Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel of Moulvibazar-2, Zillur Rahman of Moulvibazar-3.
Former MP Moazzem Hossain Ratan, former Planning Minister MA Mannan, Muhibur Rahman Manik of Sunamganj-5, Ranjit Sarkar of Sunamganj-1 are accused in the case. Abdul Majeed Khan and Moyezuddin Ruel of Habiganj-1 are accused in the 8 murder case. A case has been filed against Abu Zahir of Habiganj-3, Tourism Minister Mahbub Ali, Sayedul Haque Sumon of Habiganj-4.
However, no case has been filed against former agriculture minister Abdus Shahid, Jaya Sengupta of Sunamganj-2, Mohammad Sadiq of Sunamganj-4 and Keya Chowdhury of Habiganj-2.
12 cases have been registered in Rangpur division. Women MP Nachima Zaman Bobby, former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Asaduzzaman Bablu of Rangpur-1, Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury Duke of Rangpur-2, Zakir Hossain of Rangpur-5, Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, former speaker of Jatiya Sangsad of Rangpur-6 also in the name. A case has been filed.
Manoranjanshil Gopal of Dinajpur-1 constituency, former state minister for naval affairs Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, former whip Iqbalur Rahim, Shibli Sadiq of Dinajpur-6 are accused in the case, but no case has been filed against former finance minister HM Mahmud Ali and primary and mass education minister Mostafizur Rahman Fizar.
Aftab Uddin Sarkar of Nilphamari-1, former Culture Minister Asaduzzaman Noor, but the name of Saddam Hossain Pavel of Nilphamari-3 is not in the list of accused.
Former Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, Motahar Hossain of Lalmonirhat-1, Matiar Rahman of Lalmonirhat-3 and even Safura Begum Rumi of the reserved women’s seat have had multiple cases including murder.
Former Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen has been accused of murder and extortion case against Thakurgaon-2 Constituency MP Mazharul Islam Sujan.
Although there is no case against former railway minister Nurul Islam Sujon in his area, he was arrested in a case in Dhaka. No case has been filed in the name of Naimuzzaman Bhuiyan Muktar of Panchagarh-1.
Among the accused ministers and MPs in 24 cases in Rajshahi are Omar Farooq Chowdhury of Rajshahi-1 constituency, Rajshahi-2 Shafiqur Rahman Badsha, Rajshahi-3 Asaduzzaman Asad, Rajshahi-4 Abul Kalam Kalam Azad, former state minister Abdul Wadud Dara and former state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam.
A murder case has been registered against Jannat Ara Talukdar Henry, Habibe Millat Munna of Sirajganj-2 constituency, Abdul Aziz of Sirajganj-3 and Abdul Momin Mandal of Sirajganj-5. However, no case was filed against Tanvir Imam of Sirajganj-4, Shafiqul Islam, Tanvir Shakeel Joy of Sirajganj-1 and Chayan Islam of Sirajganj-6.
Abul Kalam Azad of Nator-1 and Siddiqur Rahman Patwari of Nator-4 are not accused in any case, but the burden of the case is on the shoulders of Shafiqul Islam Shimul of Nator-2 and Junaid Ahmed Palak of Nator-3. Seven cases have been filed against Samchul Alam Dudu of Jaipurhat-1 constituency and MP and Whip Abu Saeed Al Mahmud Swapan of Jaipurhat-2.
15 cases have been registered against Ragebul Ahsan Ripu of Bogra-6 constituency, the most in Bogra. 14 cases have been registered against Bogra-5 MP Mojibur Rahman Majnu. Apart from this, Sahadara Mannan is accused in four cases, Shariful Islam Jinnah in four cases, Khan Muhammad Saifullah Al Mehdi Bandhan in two cases, Rezaul Karim Tansen in three cases and Mustafa Alam Nannu in three cases.
Among the three constituencies of Chapainawabganj. A case has been filed against Ziaur Rahman and Abdul Odud. Among the three constituencies of Naogaon, Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, former State Planning Minister Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, Nizam Uddin Jalil and Chalim Uddin Tarafdar Salim are accused in the same case. However, no case was filed against Bruhani Sultan Mahmud Gama and Omar Farooq Sumon.
Pabna Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku, former MP Ghalibur Rahman Sharif, Golam Farooq Khandkar Prince, Feroz Kabir and Maqbul Hossain have also been booked.
Former Mymensingh Public Works Minister Sharif Ahmed, former MP Mahmudul Haque Sayem, Mohit Ur Rahman Shanto, Nazrul Islam, Abdul Malek Sarkar, Mohammed Abdul Waheed and ABM Anishuzzaman, but former Planning Minister Abdus Salam, MP Nilufar Anjum Popi, Mahmud Hasan Sumon and Fahmi Golandaz Babel have been prosecuted. There is no case in the name.
A total of five cases have been filed against Sherpur former member of parliament Chanoar Hossain Chanu and ADM Shahidul Islam. However, there is no case against Matia Chowdhury, the former MP of Awami League of Sherpur-2 Constituency and Deputy Leader of Parliament in the district. However, there are several cases against him in Dhaka.
In Jamalpur, there was no case against anyone except two cases in the name of former minister Murad Hasan. However, several cases have been filed in Dhaka in the name of Awami League organizing secretary Mirza Azmer.
A case has been filed in the name of Mostak Ahmed Ruhi, former minister Arif Khan Joy, Asim Kumar Ukil, Ahmed Hossain, former reserved MP Apu Ukil, but former ministers Ashraf Ali Khan Khosru, Iftikhar Uddin Pintu and Sazzadul Hasan are out of the accused list so far.
Although no case has been filed against former MP Noni Gopal Mondal in Khulna, several cases have been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cousin Sheikh Salauddin Jewel. The same is the case with the rest of the MPs.
A case has been filed against all other MPs except Jashore Tauhidujzaman, Kazi Nabil Ahmed, Enamul Haque Babul.
A case has been filed against all the MPs including National Assembly Whip Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in Narail. In Meherpur, a case has been filed against both of them, including former minister Farhad Hossain.
There was no case against Sheikh Helal Uddin and Sheikh Tanmoy, cousins of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in Bagerhat. However, a case has been filed against them in Dhaka. No case was filed against the remaining two MPs of Bagerhat, Habibun Nahar and HM Badiuzzaman Sohag.
In Satkhira, a case has been filed against all the MPs except the Jatiya Party MP. Apart from Jhenaidhe Naser Shahriar Zahedi Mahul and Sala Uddin Miyaji, the rest of the MPs are in the case.
Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul-Alam Hanif has the most cases in Kushtia. However, the case was not filed against Rezaul Haque Chowdhury. Among the five people in Narsingdi, Sirajul Islam Molla and former minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun were not prosecuted. No case was filed against Zahid Ahmed Tulu of Manikganj. A case has been filed against the rest of the MPs except AK Azad in Faridpur.
Several cases have been filed against former naval minister Shajahan Khan in Madaripur. A case was filed against Awami League presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim in Gopalganj, but no case was filed against former aviation and tourism minister Mohammad Farooq Khan. A case has been filed against all the MPs in Gazipur. In Kishoreganj, there is a case against everyone except Jatiya Party MP. In Tangail, a case has been filed against all MPs except Latif Siddiqui.
