When asked to comment on this, Election Commission Secretary Shafiul Azim told The Daily Star on Tuesday night, ‘After the court verdict, we have checked the legal aspects properly. In view of that, a correction notice has been issued in the case of the post of Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation.
According to EC’s amendment notification, the election tribunal’s order of October 1, the candidate of the ‘boat’ symbol for the post of mayor in the Chasik election. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was declared elected and Shahadat Hossain, the candidate of ‘rice grain’ symbol, was declared the elected mayor.
In view of this, in the gazette of January 31, 2021, against the number 1 of column 1 of the election results mentioned in column 2, ‘Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was replaced by ‘Shahadat Hossain’ and in column number 3, ‘Bangladesh Awami League’ was replaced by ‘Bangladesh Nationalist Party BNP’.
Shahadat filed a case on February 24, 2021 regarding the election results. He alleged that EC officials had ‘rigged’ the results of the election held on January 27, 2021. In the case, he demanded to cancel the election results and re-election.
Shahadat also alleged in his statement of claim that three polling stations showed his zero votes, but three days later, 28 polling stations showed his zero votes—which is unbelievable and unimaginable.
