As the rain continued in Sherpur, the flood situation worsened. The water of various rivers has increased. The water is rising in different areas and new areas are being flooded.
From last Friday to Saturday (October 5) night, a total of 7 people, including women, old people and teenagers, were drowned in flood water.
The deceased are Hatem Ali (30) and his brother Alamgir (16) son of Bachir Uddin of Abhaypur village of Nalitabari upazila, Manik Mia’s wife and Miza Begum of Char village of Bagh Berbalur upazila. In the evening of the same day, old Idris Ali drowned in the flood water in the village of Khalisakura. However, the identities of the remaining three dead people have not been found.
Nakla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibur Rahman said that one person died in Nakla on Saturday night. Besides, five people died in Nalitabari upazila and one in Jhenaigati.
It has been raining intermittently across Sherpur since Sunday (October 6) morning. This has increased the suffering of the flood victims. 7 more unions of Sherpur Sadar and Nakla upazila have been inundated with flood water since Saturday night. More and more areas are being reported flooded. As the hill slopes continue, the waters of Maharshi, Someshwari, Chellakhali, Bhogai and Mrgi rivers of Sherpur are flowing over the border.
Meanwhile, the army, fire service, BGB and various voluntary organizations are working to rescue the displaced people.
According to the Agriculture Office, at least 30,000 hectares of aman crops and 1,000 hectares of vegetable crops have been damaged in the district. At least 70 thousand farmers have been affected.
According to information provided by Sherpur District Fisheries Officer Pranab Kumar Karmakar, 2 thousand 57 fish cages were washed away in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas only. The loss amount is more than 11 crore rupees initially.
Jhenaigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashraful Alam Russel said, we have succeeded in rescuing the water trapped people properly. Many have been taken to shelters. Clean water and dry food are being provided for them.
He also said that 70 to 80 percent of the upazila has been flooded.
Nalitabari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Masum Rana said there are 123 shelters in Nalitabari. Among them, more than 10 thousand people have taken shelter in 58 shelters. 12 unions of the upazila have been flooded. Out of this, 5 unions have suffered more damage.
Sherpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman said that the water of several rivers in the district is flowing above the danger level. District administration and upazila administration are on alert. We are working to rescue the victims and deliver dry food. At the same time, I am getting news of flooding in new areas.
