A young man named Tofajjal (30) who was mentally unstable was killed in a mob thrashing at Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall of Dhaka University (DU) on suspicion of bas been alleged that Tk 2 lakh was demanded from the family before killing him.
It is known that Tofazzal is the son of deceased Abdur Rahman of Charduani village of Kathaltali union taluk of Patharghata upazila. Tofajjal, who died 4 years ago, was traumatized in a love affair and was somewhat mentally unstable. Before losing his mental balance, he was the president of the Kanthaltali Union Chhatra League of the upazila. Within a few years, Tofajjal’s mother, father, and only elder brother also died. Due to which Tofazzal used to roam the streets without family and guardian. However, Tofajjal has been seen eating food in the area of Dhaka University for several years.
Tofazzal passed HSC from Lemua Syed Fazlul Haque Degree College of Patharghata Upazila, then completed Honors Masters in Bangla from Barisal BM College and studied at Bangabandhu Law College. In this condition, he became mentally unbalanced.
Tofazzal’s cousin Farooq Hossain said, “We heard this morning that Tofazzal was brutally beaten to death.” Now it has been sent to Dhaka Medical for post-mortem. Cousin Shahadat Hossain is with him. After the formalities at the police station, he will leave for home. After bringing the body, after the funeral, the burial will be done next to the parents.
Meanwhile, Sharifa Akhter, wife of Tofazzal’s elder brother ASI Nasir Uddin, said that while Tofazzal was being beaten up, someone was demanding Rs 200,000 as a ransom through a mobile phone. Couldn’t send money because we don’t have support to give money. We think Tofajjal died for this money.
He also said that Tofazzal had a love relationship with Tina, the younger daughter of Shahidul Islam, the current chairman of Kathaltali Union of Patharghata Upazila. Failing in love leads to emotional imbalance.
Tofazzal’s uncle, Fazlul Haque, said, “I want exemplary justice for those who brutally killed Tofazzal.” He further said that his father Abdur Rahman died in 2011, mother Beauty Begum died in 2013 and brother Nasir Uddin police ASI died in 2023.
