The chief advisor of the interim government has instructed the experts of the police and BUET to solve the problem of traffic congestion in the capital. Muhammad Yunus. 

He gave this order in a meeting with two city traffic system experts from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) on Monday. Top officials of DMP participated in the meeting held at Rashtriya Guest House Padma.   

The Chief Adviser asked the DMP to find a ‘quick and effective way’ to decongest traffic in Dhaka, a metropolis of around two crore inhabitants. 

Dr. Yunus said, we have to reduce the pressure of traffic. We need to find a solution very soon.’

At this time, the traffic police was instructed to undertake some pilot or experimental programs to alleviate traffic congestion. For example limiting bus stopping time for minor stops to less than two minutes on 2-3 important roads and later using such method on other roads of the city.

BUET experts participating in the meeting have been asked to find indigenous solutions to decongest at least one traffic corridor with the help of their students. They are also asked to fix traffic signals using local skills or experience. 

Professor Moazzem Hossain, BUET’s transportation and traffic system expert, gave a presentation in the meeting. He said that only 40 thousand crore rupees are lost every year due to traffic congestion in Dhaka city.

DMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Nazmul Hasan said the traffic situation has continued to improve following the deployment of more traffic police in recent weeks. Full deployment is expected by the end of next week.

Special Assistant to Chief Adviser Lieutenant General (retired) Abdul Hafiz, civil engineering professor of BUET also spoke in the meeting. Hadiuzzaman and DMP Additional Commissioner Farooq Ahmed.
