Due to the protest of RAK ceramic workers by blocking the road, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway has been closed for traffic since 7 am today.

The workers started protesting by blocking the road in Sreepur Jaina-Nayanpur area of the highway from morning.

Gazipur Shilpa police inspector Rahyan Mia told The Daily Star at 9:30 am, ‘traffic movement on the highway is not normal yet.’

According to the police, the workers are protesting by blocking both lanes of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway demanding the area bill for the month of January to August. As a result, long traffic jams have been created on both sides of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

Industrial police arrived at the spot and are negotiating with the workers to move away from the highway.

The workers said that they have been paying the salary according to the old gazette without giving the salary in the form of increment even though they have received an annual increment from their factory last January.

They demanded payment of salary in increments.

Attempts were made to contact the manager of the RAK Ceramics factory to inquire about this, but he did not receive calls for comment.
