Doctors’ ‘shutdown’ postponed

The doctors have suspended the complete shutdown program till 8 pm tomorrow Monday, assuring the arrest of the attackers within 24 hours.

Advisor to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Noorjahan Begum gave this assurance to the protestors on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier today at around 2 o’clock in the morning, the doctors announced the closure of services in all medical centers across the country demanding the arrest and trial of the assailants, ensuring a safe workplace, and four doctors in connection with the beating of three doctors of the surgery department of Dhaka Medical College (DMH) Hospital. They call this program ‘Complete Shutdown’.

The program was announced by Abdul Ahad, resident surgeon of the neurosurgery department of DMK Hospital.

The emergency department of Dhamek Hospital was vandalized and doctors were beaten last Saturday night. The doctors stopped the medical services in the emergency department of Dhamek Hospital from this morning to demand justice and safety of the attack. Later, the hospital authorities held a discussion with all the doctors, but the discussion was not fruitful. After that, the doctors called a strike across the country.

Later today around 4 pm the coordinators sat in discussion with the agitators. Health Advisor Health and Family Welfare Advisor Nurjahan Begum participated there.

On Saturday morning, the death of Ahsanul Haque Diptar, a student of Bangladesh University of Business Technology (BUBT), was reported due to the negligence of the doctors at DMK Hospital. Later, three doctors of the neurosurgery department of the hospital were beaten up. After seeing the CCTV footage of the incident, the doctors gave an ultimatum to identify the culprits and arrest them.

On the same day, at midnight, the injured in the clash between the two groups from Sipahibagh area of ​​Khilgaon went there for treatment. Then another group entered the emergency department of the hospital along with Chapati. At that time, the authorities arrested four people and handed them over to the army.

Later, the patient’s relatives vandalized the one-stop emergency center of the hospital’s emergency department in connection with the death of another patient. Because of this, the doctors stopped the operation of the emergency department due to safety concerns. They went on strike before the expiry of 24 hours of the ultimatum.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at the Shahbagh police station in the capital regarding the attack and vandalism on three doctors of the neurosurgery department of the Dhamek Hospital.
