404 crore loss in fisheries in Comilla due to floods

Comilla has faced extensive damage due to severe floods. Like other sectors of the district, the fisheries sector has suffered huge losses. The district, which has been the first and second in fish production for several times, has suffered a total loss of Tk 404 crore in the fisheries sector due to severe floods. Which is more than any time in the past.


On Wednesday (August 28), the district fisheries officer’s office revealed this information.

The office said that a total of 23 thousand 42 farms or ponds in the district have been damaged by the ongoing floods. The area is 5 thousand 835.61 hectares.

25 thousand 538.50 tons of fin fish, 10.28 tons of shrimps, 10 crore 17 lakh fishes have been damaged from these affected farms. According to the market value, the loss of Tk 358 crore 12 lakh in fish, Tk 5 crore in shrimp, and Tk 17 crore 8 lakh 92 thousand in fish.

Also damage to infrastructure of ponds, farms or sluice gates worth Tk 22.95 crore and nets worth Tk 80 lakh were destroyed.

The office also said that Barura Upazila was the most affected in the district. A total of 3 thousand 749 fish farms or ponds have been destroyed in this upazila. The area is 903 hectares. Besides, 1 thousand 10 in Brahmanpara, 1 thousand 800 in Burichong, 3 thousand 162 in Nangalkot, 2 thousand 7 in Lalmai, 2 thousand 350 in Manoharganj, 2 thousand 452 in Adarsh ​​Sadar, 800 in Muradnagar, 200 in Chandina, 2 thousand 500 in Laksam, 22 in Titas, 400 in Devidwar, 1 thousand 840 in Chauddagram and 660 fish farms or ponds in Sadar south have been submerged.

Also, 15 fish seed farms have been damaged in the district. The area is 2.69 hectares. Among those affected, fish seed farms in Jangalia, Devidwar, Chandina, Burichong, Laksam, Homna and Chauddagram have been affected. 62 lakh 65 thousand rupees have been damaged in these farms.

District Fisheries Officer. Belal Hossain said, I have prepared a preliminary list of damage to the fisheries sector due to floods. The damage may increase further. The amount of damage can be accurately assessed if the water in the tank goes down.
