Attorney General wanted to dismiss the writ of banning Awami League

Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman appealed to ban Awami League and cancel the party’s registration because of indiscriminate killing of students.

The writ was filed on behalf of a human rights organization called SARDA on August 19.

On Tuesday (August 27), the Attorney General took part in the hearing of the writ and applied for the dismissal of the writ.

Later in a press conference, Md. Asaduzzaman said, the government cannot support the process of deregistration of political parties in any way.

He said, ‘those who have committed crimes in the party will be prosecuted. Organizations cannot be deregistered for their terrorist activities.’

The Attorney General also spoke about the weakness of writ petitions. He said, ‘Awami League was not made a defendant in the writ.’

Moreover, he also submitted that the petitioner has no jurisdiction to file such a writ.

The petition sought a minimum term of three years for the interim government to reform the state.

In this regard, Md. Asaduzzaman said, “The term of this government cannot be determined by the court.
