The bank accounts of Abdul Awal Mintoo, a businessman and vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), along with those of his spouse Nasreen Awal and son Tabith Mohammed Awal, have been unfrozen after 17 years.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued the directive to the banks on Thursday, reports The Daily Star.

The Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the NBR had initially ordered the freezing of their accounts on August 1, 2007.

This decision was based on the recommendation of a panel formed under the Army-backed caretaker government.

Last week, NBR lifted the restriction on transactions in Khaleda Zia’s accounts after receiving an application from her lawyer.

In August 2007, NBR directed banks to freeze the withdrawals or transfers from active and inactive accounts held by Mintoo, either individually or jointly.

The CIC also blocked access to vaults, lockers, savings certificates, and other savings instruments owned by him.
