Army sues over 3,000 in Gopalganj for attack, vandalism

A case has been filed in Gopalganj over the attack on army personnel, setting fire to vehicles, vandalism, and the snatching of weapons.

Lieutenant Colonel Md Maksudul Alam of the 10th Bengal Regiment filed the case at Gopalganj Sadar police station on Thursday.

In the case, the names of 106 individuals, including the president and general secretary of the district Awami League, have been mentioned. Additionally, 3,200 unidentified individuals have been listed as accused.

The officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar police station, Mohammad Anisur Rahman, confirmed the matter.

He added that they have started an investigation into the incident but no suspects have been detained so far.

According to the case statement, on the afternoon of August 10, thousands of Awami League leaders, activists, and locals gathered to protest and block the Dhaka-Khulna highway, demanding the return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to the country.

Upon receiving the news, army personnel on duty in Gopalganj went to the spot and asked them to leave the highway and conduct their protest peacefully.

However, the protesters got into an argument with the army personnel, which escalated into an attack on the soldiers.

In the attack, nine people, including four army officers, were injured. Additionally, two rifles and six magazines were snatched from the army, one vehicle was set on fire, and two vehicles were vandalized.

Later that day, one weapon was recovered, and the following day, another weapon and three magazines were retrieved by the army.
