Elections to be held at a reasonable time after necessary reforms: Chunnu

Jatiya Party Secretary General Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu said that the Jatiya Party has full support for the interim government. He also called on the government to hold elections by making necessary reforms within a reasonable time.

He said this at a press conference at the office of the chairman of the Jatiya Party on Friday. National Secretary General Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu said, the first task is to restore law and order in the country. The logical demands of the police force must be accepted. The families of the leaders who were martyred in the movement should be compensated. At the same time, at least one person in every family should be provided with a job. Legal action should be taken against the killers. Legal action should also be taken against those involved in police station robbery and police killings. Remittance flow should be increased with utmost importance to face the economic challenges. Export trade should be prioritized, foreign investment should be increased and freelancers should be given maximum support. Educational institutions should be opened as soon as possible. Inconsistencies in text books should be removed.

He said that the election system should be changed and the election should be done on a proportional basis. Election Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, Public Works Commission and all the constitutional institutions must be reformed and the institutions must be freed from influence. Complete separation of the Judiciary and appointment of judges to the High Courts should be enacted. In the current parliamentary system, the sole power of the Prime Minister should be reduced and a balance of power should be created between the President and the Parliament. A citizen should not be Prime Minister more than 2 times. Again, the one who will be the prime minister should not be the leader of the parliament. Article 70 of the Constitution needs to be reformed and powers of the Parliamentary Standing Committee should be increased. In the last 15 years, corrupt ministers, MPs, bureaucrats, police, and all corruption should be investigated and brought under the law. Arrangements should be made to bring the smuggled money back to the country through the law. Jatiya Party General Secretary also demanded that elections be held within a reasonable time after completing the above and if the country’s political forces and government feel the need for more reforms.
