Security guards arrested a Chhatra League leader named Mohammad Jewel while stealing window grills from the residential hall of Chittagong University (CHBI) and taking them outside for sale. Jewel is known in the campus as a student of banking and insurance department and former co-editor of branch Chhatra League and a follower of subgroup Sixty Nine.

On Thursday (June 20) afternoon, he was arrested by security personnel at the main gate of the university while he was taking the grills out of the campus in a rickshaw for sale from Shahjalal Hall. Later, he was released on bail by the university’s proctoral body.

In the bond given to the proctor, the student stated, ‘I am Mohammed Jewell, Session 17-18, Department of Banking and Insurance, Shahjalal Hall, Room No. 336. I accidentally got stuck at zero point gate on my way out of Shahjalal Hall to sell the two window grills abandoned by autorickshaw and promised not to do such thing in future if Mr. Proctor appeared. If I do in future, I will readily accept the measures taken by the police administration and the university authorities.’

When asked about this, Chhatra League worker Mohammad Jewel said that the two grills are very old. I was carrying them without realizing that they would not be of any use. But later the matter became much bigger, he claimed.

Zainal Abedin, in-charge of Chittagong University police station, said that a student was taking the property of the university to sell. He was released on bond in our presence.

University proctor professor Dr. Ahidul Alam said, a student was taking some window grills from Shahjalal Hall to sell outside. In the afternoon, the security guard of the university informed us about the matter. The student was later arrested and released on bond. The student claimed that the rods were damaged and wanted to sell them. A student may never take University property outside of the University, whether abandoned or otherwise. In this way, no one can do whatever he wants with the property of the university.

He also said that actually university students should have a minimum sense of what can and cannot be done.
