Teesta-Brahmaputra water rises, flood forecast

Water in 15 rivers of Kurigram continues to rise. The waters of Brahmaputra, Dharla, Dudhkumar and Teesta rivers flowing through the district have risen. The hill slopes coming down from the upstream and the heavy rain water are submerging the char-dwip char and the low-lying areas along the river banks. As a result, the people living on the banks spend their days with the fear of floods.

In the next 24-48 hours, there may be short-term floods in Kurigram district, Kurigram Water Development Board said. 

Rafsan Jani, sub-divisional engineer of the local water development board, said in a press release on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. that the water level of Dharla river has increased to 27 cm at Dharla bridge point in Taluk Shimulbari Sheikh Hasina 2nd Dharla bridge in Fulbari upazila and 1.6 cm at Dharla bridge point, Teesta at Kaunia rail bridge point. The water in the river is 19 cm, in Bhurungamari upazila the water in Dudhkumar river is 5 cm in Pateshwari Sonahat bridge point, in Nageshwari upazila the water in Brahmaputra river is flowing 1.23 cm in Nunkhawa point and 1.45 cm in Chilmari naval port point.

River erosion has occurred at 15 points in Rajarhat, Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Rajirpur upazilas. On the other hand, rain has continued in Kurigram since last few days. Besides, there has been heavy rainfall in India upstream of Kurigram which will enter Bangladesh through these rivers. 

Matiar Rahman of Dharla district of Kurigram said, due to rising water in Dharla, my padal field has sunk. Now all the potal plants will die. Now if the water does not come, I could have made more money by selling the bottles. But this time due to untimely increase in water there will be huge damage to crops. 

Aslam of Rajarhat Teesta Par said, the river water has increased a lot due to heavy rain. Many groundnut fields in Char have been destroyed. I can’t bring the picked nuts home. All the fodder has sunk. Almond farmers now have their hands on their foreheads.

Subal Chandra Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Rajarhat Agricultural Meteorological Office of Kurigram, said that 115 mm of rain has been recorded in the district in the last 12 hours; It is likely to rain for two more days.

Rakibul Hasan, Executive Engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said that if the water continues to rise, in the next 24-48 hours the water of Teesta at Kaunia point, the water of Dudhkumar river at Pateshwari point and the water of Taluk Shimulbari point Dharla may cross the flood limit.

Meanwhile, the district administration has made all preparations to deal with the upcoming flood, said Deputy Commissioner Saidul Arif.
