Extortion in Palashi raw market, former leader of Chhatra League beaten up

A former BCL leader and one of his associates were beaten up while making money in the Palashi raw market adjacent to the Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) in the capital.

This incident took place at around 11:30 pm on Sunday. The two victims of the gang beating are Md. Mehdi Hasan and Shahidul Islam. According to the police, Mehdi is the former leader of Dhaka University’s Salimullah Muslim (SM) Chhatra League. Shahidul is his associate. Two people have been arrested in the case of extortion.

 of Police. Mahbub-Uz Zaman told Prothom Alo on Monday morning that Mehedi and Shahidul Palashi went to extort money in the raw market yesterday around 11:30 pm. Raw market traders got together and arrested the two. They beat both of them. Later they were handed over to Chawkbazar police station. The police took the two to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. After the first treatment, they were taken to the police station.

A case has been filed against Mehedi and Shahidul in Chawkbazar police station on behalf of the traders of Palashi raw market on the charge of extortion. Chowkbazar police said that two people have been arrested in this case. They have been sent to court.

According to the police, Mehdi was a student of Dhaka University in the academic year 2006-2007. The traders alleged that he and Shahidul used to go to the Palashi raw market almost every day to collect subscriptions.
