Who will fight for the presidency of Iran after Raisi’s death

After the death of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, the election will be held on June 28 to choose a new president. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the names of six presidential candidates for this election. The Guardian Council, which oversees election-related matters in the country, approved them as candidates.

The names of those six candidates were announced on Sunday. They are the Speaker of the Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the former negotiator on the nuclear program Said Jalili, the former Minister of Interior Mostafa Pour Mohammadi, the Mayor of Tehran Ali Reza Zakani, the current Vice President Amir Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi and the Member of Parliament Masoud Pezeshkian.

Out of these six people, except Masoud Pezeshkian, all belong to the conservative circle. Iran’s hardline former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has not been nominated for the next election. Before this, he did not get a chance to participate in the presidential elections of 2017 and 2021.
On May 19, the helicopter carrying President Raisi crashed near Zolfa area in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian and some senior officials were killed in this. After Raisi’s death, First Vice President Mohammad Mokhbar is serving as Iran’s interim president.
