Sophia made history in Odisha, becoming the first Muslim woman legislator

Sophia Firdous has created history in the assembly elections of the Indian state of Odisha. She became the state’s first Muslim woman MLA (MLA) on a Congress ticket.

Sophia won from Baravati-Cuttack seat in Odisha. He defeated Purnachandra Mohapatra of BJP by 8 thousand 1 votes. Prakash Chandra Behra of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) came third in this seat.

Sophia is 32 years old. His father is senior Congress leader Mohammad Moquim. He was MLA from the same constituency. However, he was disqualified due to his conviction in a corruption case. Later Congress nominated Sofia for this seat.

Sophia graduated in Civil Engineering from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology under KIIT University, Bhubaneswar.

Later Sophia got admission in Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. In 2022, he completed the Executive General Management Program from there.

Before contesting the polls, Sophia was working as a director in her father’s company Metro Builders. Apart from this, he is associated with Bhubaneswar branch of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India.

Sophia mentioned in the election affidavit that there was never any criminal case against her. His total wealth is around 5 crore rupees. He has a debt of around 28 lakh rupees.

The BJP has won 78 out of 147 seats in this year’s assembly elections in Odisha. They got a single majority in the state assembly. This ended the 24-year rule of the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government in the state.
