In a report on Tuesday (May 21) night, the British media BBC reported that Naples, Italy was shaken by more than 160 earthquakes during the night.

Homes have been evacuated and many schools closed after a series of earthquakes struck the area around Naples in southern Italy, reports said. More than 160 earthquakes were recorded there last Monday evening and night.

The strongest of these earthquakes was a magnitude 4.4, according to the BBC. The earthquake struck near the country’s Pozuli city around 8pm local time. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said it was the region’s strongest earthquake in 40 years.

Hundreds of tents were pitched in Pozuli after the earthquake. Some residents spent most of the night on the streets. Some go to relatives in other places.

Several families are considering leaving the area entirely due to low-level earthquakes that have occurred in the past few months, local media reported. A local outlet quoted a resident of Naples as saying they had never felt such a strong earthquake.

Naples Mayor Manfredi warned locals that residents as well as officials should be on the lookout for more serious earthquakes in the future. Officers should be prepared to handle any emergency situation. He warned that such a situation may last for several months.
