The Gaza war has revived global pressure for recognition of a Palestinian state. In the meantime, 146 of the 193 member states of the United Nations have recognized it.
Al Jazeera reported that on Tuesday, Slovenia became the latest country to recognize the Palestinian state. This shows that the long-cherished view of Western countries has broken down. They previously thought that the Palestinians could achieve statehood only through peace negotiations with Israel.
The source added that Slovenia has largely followed the steps of Spain, Ireland and Norway. They recognized the Palestinian state last week. Israel was angered by their action. But those European countries did not care about it.
According to Al Jazeera, 146 of the 193 member states of the United Nations have so far recognized the state of Palestine. However, most of the countries on this list belong to the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia. So far the United States, Canada, most of Western Europe, Australia, Japan or South Korea have not recognized them.
Notably, last April the United States used its veto in the UN Security Council to block Palestine’s bid to become a full UN member state.
