At least 107 people have been killed in a stampede at a religious event in Hathors district of Uttar Pradesh, India. About 150 more people have been admitted to the hospital with injuries in this incident.
The incident took place on Tuesday (July 2) in a village in Hathors district of Uttar Pradesh. The event was organized about 350 km southwest of the state capital Lucknow.
According to local media in India, a religious leader named Bhole Baba and his followers were trampled in a rush as they left the venue.
Uttar Pradesh senior medical officer Ram Mohan Tiwari told AFP on Tuesday, ‘We have recovered 107 bodies so far. The number of dead bodies is increasing.
According to the Hathors police, the accident happened due to the crowd. However, they could not say anything specific about how many people had gathered on that occasion.
Police also said that more than 150 injured people have been admitted to hospital, the death toll may rise.
Umesh Kumar Tripathi, chief medical officer of the district, told reporters that many people were injured in the stampede during the religious ceremony. The injured have been admitted to hospital.
It is to be noted that everyone gathered for the Puja of Hindu god Shiva in a village of Hathors, about 140 km southeast of New Delhi. Earlier, in 2016, an explosion occurred due to a display of fireworks at a temple on the occasion of the Hindu New Year. At least 112 people died. Earlier in 2013, another 115 people died after being trampled on a bridge near a temple in Madhya Pradesh, India.
